KYBELLA® is the first injectable treatment FDA-approved to improve the appearance of submental fullness, or fat underneath the chin. While traditional procedures to get rid of excess chin fat required that patients undergo painful, surgical procedures, KYBELLA® involves only a few simple injectable sessions. These can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, and bring patients dramatic results with little to no downtime.
The primary ingredient of KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a substance that is naturally produced by the human body. Within the body, deoxycholic acid breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. When it is injected into the chin area during KYBELLA® treatments, this substance begins to slowly break down the fat there and remove it from the body.
Because this fat is removed from the body gradually, patients will notice the results of their treatments becoming more and more visible as time passes and they undergo more treatments. Since the overall number of fat cells in the chin area decreases after treatment, the ability for a patient treated with KYBELLA® to regain submental fullness decreases. Because of this, the results of a series of injections typically last for years after treatment.
While each KYBELLA® injection session is fairly uncomfortable, it only takes between 15-20 minutes to complete. Most patients need to undergo between two and four injection appointments to get significant fat reduction results.
Side effects like bruising, numbness, redness, tingling, and itching are common, but usually fade within a few days of treatment. Significant swelling in the chin and neck area is common and typically lasts for a week after each injection session.
