When we were young and our skin was healthy, it was so easy to take beautiful skin for granted. We often did things in youth that damaged our skin. Now, there are things that we can do as we age to undo some of the damage that was caused to our skin and restore our youthful, vibrant appearance. One technique is microdermabrasion.
Many people referred to this procedure as an instant facelift because it rejuvenates a person’s face without the surgery and downtime that a facelift or other procedures require. Microdermabrasion is a procedure that is not only performed on women. As men are starting to face the same pressure to maintain a youthful appearance in the workplace, more of them are being drawn to this facial rejuvenating procedure.
Microdermabrasion is a procedure that uses small, rough, sand-like grains to remove the external layer of a person’s skin. This procedure is primarily performed on the face, but it can also be done on a person’s hands, chest, neck, and arms.
This procedure works in part because of the way that the human skin has been designed. The human skin has two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the layer of skin that is the outermost layer of dead skin cells. On top of the epidermis, there is a very thin layer called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is a barrier that prevents the outside world from affecting the lower layers of skin. It is so effective that it stops everything but the smallest of molecules from passing through.
For this reason, when a person puts lotion and other creams on their face, they have little effect because the majority of it cannot penetrate the stratum corneum. During the microdermabrasion procedure, it is the stratum corneum that is removed.
When the stratum corneum is removed or damaged, the body senses the injury and immediately rushes to repair the lost skin layer with the new healthy ones. For this reason, in the first hour or so after the treatment, patients will experience mild swelling and redness.
Once the stratum corneum has been removed and new skin cells are created, the surface of the skin is improved. It looks healthier and smoother. Additionally, some visible imperfections, like blemishes and fine lines, are also removed.
A final benefit of microdermabrasion is that with the stratum corneum gone, medical creams and lotions will have a more powerful effect on the deeper layers of the skin.
